Session 8: Empowered learners and Empowered teachers

Session 8:  Empowered learners and Empowered teachers

Empowered - unpacking from the word Agency

It is very difficult to get by with the average wage. It gives very little choice for some families, considering whanau in different spaces who have been displaced and had to move into another area.

Research shows that children coming from low socioeconomic communities arrive at school  2 -3 years compared to students in high decile schools. Also fall back with amount of words being learnt and a more likely to be transient families.

Technology spaces is not just a tool. Use the connections so that children can learn create and share. Creative and supportive learning environments that extend beyond the classroom.

Digital Technology Curriculum:

Progress outcomes - Guides -

  • Computational thinking - Algorithms, coding - Early levels: Can be non computerised - step to step instructions programming and programming fundamentals. making a jam sandwich input and the output.

Designing and developing Digital outcomes - Movie making, game design etc..

Learning through Coding: Minecraft

Matt- Shared around using Java script when coding with microbits - merge cubes. online microbits.- So going to have a look at this as I have 2 microbits in my office and hacve not used them yet so will need to do this

Mat also shared around Telo drones - EDU - ipads install the app - text based coding and shared a link so will look at this https://learn.droneblocks.io/ and also an application that he applied for around funding for Drones will email him to find out a bit more.

Also Mat shared a link to see how we can connect our accounts for students using minecraft so will look into this also

Reflections Question: What do I see is the greatest joy when empowering our tamariki learn in school.

I believe the greatest joy when empowering our tamariki is giving our children choice to explore areas area interest, working from a strengths based approach.  We can always plan the learning for our  children, but if there is no interest it becomes very difficult. I see it like trying to lead a horse to water when a horse does not want to drink. But if we give our tamariki choice, they will feel empowered and motivated a to enquire. I really like the multimodal framework that even though it is open and structured framework, it is open and gives children different modes to learning rather than just reading some children who find this task boring may want to read a poem on the same topic or listen to a youtube clip different mode gives choice and ownership. I also really like this video around the learning pit - highlighting the importance of questioning. Where the definition of a tourist and questions  really got our children to thinking deeper rather than on the surface level?

Next steps:

  • Continue to develop year 7 & 8 Tech sites
  • Survey for year 7 & 8 Devices lockdown learning
  • To look at drones and email Matt - enquire funding
  • Look at how we can include minecraft accounts start with year 7 & 8 classes
  • Have another look at some of the slides in prep of the test well hopefully I do lol

  1. Kia ora Sima,

I really enjoyed the video you shared about the learning pit, I had heard of this and used the idea with my learners in the classroom a few years ago now, but it was really interesting to hear from the creator of this idea.
I've sent you through some other information about setting up Minecraft for your learners, it's a great platform that really engages our students.
